And the person who hoisted it made a little bit of history, too.

Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the 2025 Heisman Trophy, with the announcement capping off a ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 13 from Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room in New York City.

Mendoza beat out fellow Heisman finalists Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin for the honor.

Mendoza becomes the first Indiana player to ever win the Heisman.

Pavia finished in second place — with 1,435 points, to Mendoza’s 2,392 — while Love and Sayin finished third and fourth, respectively.

Each of the four finalists was from a team that won at least 10 games this season. With Mendoza’s victory, 13 of the past 16 Heisman recipients have been quarterbacks. Love’s the latest running back to fall short of an award that hasn’t gone to a ball-carrier since Derrick Henry in 2015.

USA TODAY Sports provided live updates from the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Here are the highlights:

There’s no player in the country more important to their team than Diego Pavia, but Mendoza’s impressive and efficient numbers while quarterbacking the nation’s No. 1 team will put him over the top in what should be a close race.
